I do so love* when Thor needs to have basic concepts explained to him in fics. So, uh, let’s consider what Thor might do better than other Avengers:
- Diplomacy & politics
- Technology & natural science (physics, chemistry, mathematics - remember this part in the first Thor movie when he took one look at Jane “an astrophysicist with three degrees” Foster’s notes and then drew her a picture of what she was missing?)
- Ability to communicate in any language
- General ability to move quickly through any kind of terrain,
courtesy of a lifetime of dicking around with Loki around different Realms- Adaptability (to new cultures, technologies, environments)
- Leadership skills
- Freaking weather powers
And what he might not know:
- Pop culture
- Particular sociopolitical concepts
- History
- Specific laws
- Democracy (that would actually be interesting to explore)
- Art and literature and whatever
So my point is: Thor might not know the difference between a Ferrari and Mercedes Benz, but he would probably know that it’s a car. Likewise, he could quickly figure out how to drive one, although he wouldn’t be familiar with traffic laws.
You know, sometimes I feel like no matter what the movies and the comics do with Thor, no matter how many times they show to us that Thor is intelligent and wise (in many ways wiser than his Midgardian friends because he is 1000 years older and comes from an advanced race) and highly capable of adapting and learning new things at breakneck speed, there’s still this large group of fans in the general MCU fandom (not just fic authors) who refuses to let go of their OOC as hell fanon and headcanons and continue to portray Thor as a booming idiot who speaks in all caps and doesn’t understand a thing about Midgardian culture.
Like, have these people even seen the canon or do they just choose to ignore it so they can continue to hold on to their ridiculous fanons? I don’t actually mind silly things or poking a little fun at Thor, but can perople at least come up with something that isn’t completely OOC at this point? Because the booming poptart Thor who gets treated by the other Avengers like a giant baby is not only offensive, it’s also lazy and completely out of character. After AoU, it’s probably more canon to have Thor be the one who looks fondly at his tiny Midgardian friends and thinks “aww you guys are so adorable with your antiquated machines and limited knowledge of the universe, but I love you anyway.”
I’ll admit I’m guilty of a little Thor OOC-ing (such as Thor having trouble with the dishwasher), mostly because I’m amused by the mental image of Thor breaking it and Tony getting exasperated that he has to order another.
But uuuuuuuugh, this makes me want to go back and re-write all of the Avengers fic I have, because Thor, fuck, Thor is such a good, insightful character.
And man, once he finds out about certain stuff in pop culture, he would be all over some of it. Like, I could see Thor freaking loving Snapchat, or Instagram, or Twitter.
*spins off with all the headcanons of the Avengers*
